The world is in MY hands and all I have to do is save water? Hey, I can do that! In honor of Earth Day, I didn’t shower today. I told B of my plan yesterday and he wasn’t surprised. He knows how much I care about the Earth and preserving it for our combined 6 children (and he’s seen my schedule so he knows my angle). I like to do my part. We all should.
I read that you use 7 gallons of water per minute with each shower you take. I take a 15 minute shower (only because we have a small hot water heater and it’s all it allows) which equates to 105 gallons of water per shower (yes, I totally pulled up my computer’s calculator to figure that out). So, by skipping one shower, on this day only, I could save 105 gallons of water. This was brilliant!
Seriously, I love to shower. In my past life, I showered for 30 minutes every day, shaving daily of course. I cared nothing about water conservation nor the environment. Today I vowed to fix that, and I skipped my shower. It had nothing to do with the fact that I had a gazillion emails, a campaign to run, content to approve for an online magazine, kids to shuffle back and forth to school, a room to paint (oh my stars…seriously…I haven’t even started painting Bubby’s room), an over-demanding 4 year old, and some nonsense surrounding a 12 year old drama queen at school this afternoon. No, it had nothing to do with any of that. And of course I shower daily other than today. OF COURSE I DO!
So today, in honor of Earth Day, I conserved 105 gallons of water by my act of selflessness. I did a good deed. I should be proud!
But I’m not. Truth be known. I *might* not shower every day these days like I did in my past life. This lack of showering is almost never planned. Life hits and I skip a shower (or 3) almost every week now. I do wash my face (way less water…I’m doing my part), brush my teeth and hair, and put on my make up. Every.single.day. But I don’t always shower. So from this day forward, instead of looking at this as an overwhelming fact that has become part of my life as a work at home mom, I’m going to look at it as my part in doing something good for the environment. I’m helping to ensure that this planet is still a viable place for my 6 children to live in the future, 105 gallons at a time.
And hey, today was intentional. Pinky swear! And for the record, I don’t stink. I asked B. He confirmed it.
Happy Earth Day y’all! Do you do your part?
Disclosure: I promise with all my pink puffy heart that I am not making fun of Earth Day nor the need to preserve our environment. This needs to be done. Our children’s health and future rely on it. I just think it’s funny that I found a way to take my lack of showering and turn it into an environmental issue. I’m a neat freak. I had to grasp like this!
