A lot of people have this crazy misconception that healthy foods just don’t taste as good as the “bad” stuff. They think if you don’t eat salads and juice constantly, you can’t really be thin and/or fit. Guess what? They’re wrong! You can turn almost any meal into a healthy dish that won’t make you gain a ga-zillion pounds or put you at the risk of a heart attack (yes, I just went all drama queen there, but seriously, ditch the salt people).
We love to grill, and my family loves burgers, but I hate all of the fat in burgers so when Saturday rolled around and it was time to grill out, we had Grilled Cheesy Chicken Burgers instead. Just as tasty as the traditional burger without all of the fat and salty seasonings, plus glorious gooey cheese that cooks inside the burgers.
What you’ll need:
~2 lb. ground chicken (of course you know we use Tyson)
~2 tbsp onion flakes
~10 non-salted crackers, crumbled
~2 tbsp Mrs. Dash Garlic & Herb Seasoning
~shredded cheese of choice
What you’ll do:
~Mix all of the above ingredients in a bowl
~Make one thin patty and sprinkle the cheese on top in the center
~Make another thin patty and press it over the first sealing the sides to lock in the cheese
Then grill to perfection and enjoy this healthier version of the traditional burger without all of the guilt. We didn’t go super healthy on the sides. Just some simple low sodium beans this time because we were “porching” it this night. But these would be delicious with some homemade guacamole and pita chips, or served along side a salad.
B and Bug just ate them on buns (see, the whole meal doesn’t have to be low carb/sodium, as long as you make the focus of the meal healthy) slathered in some homemade low sodium barbeque sauce and infused with glorious cheese. The cheese seriously just melts it’s way throughout the meat so each bite contains cheesy goodness. Deliciously flavorful and satisfying with no mom-guilt. Score another one for me!
Are you still grilling out this year? What are some of your family favorites? I’d love to try out your recipes with my low/no-sodium twist of course. Care to share?
