A Night at Scare School: Monsters U, Scare Tactics, and Colored Popcorn

Before I get into this scary tale, I should let you know that I received the Collector’s Edition Blu-ray and DVD Combo Pack, with bonus features, of Disney Pixar’s Monsters University to facilitate this family movie night from Click Communications and their client. As always, all of the photos, ideas, and opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
Did you miss Disney Pixar’s Monsters University in theaters earlier this year? Yea, we did too and I was bummed. I loved seeing Monsters, Inc. in the theater with my older girls years ago and had looked forward to bringing the babies to watch this hilarious prequel at the theater. But, as always, life got in the way. School started, cold and flu season hit, and life just go crazy so it never happened. BUT never fear (pun intended), you can now learn to be a Scarer from the comfort of your own home. That’s right! This monsterrific masterpiece became available in store and online on Blu-ray and DVD on October 29, 2013.
Y’all know how much we love a good family movie night at home, so of course we got our copy of Monsters U, gathered up our Scarers (those from the movie and my own two little monsters), popped up some blue and green popcorn (because what’s a movie night without popcorn and the colors seemed to fit the theme), and we settled in to get “schooled” on all of the best scare tactics.
Before I get into the movie details, let me explain this popcorn. Themed movie nights are so much more fun than just the typical, ‘let’s sit down and watch a movie together’ nights. But I like things easy and the babies are easy to please. Folks…this was easy and the babies loved it.

Make your own colored popcorn, you’ll need:
  • Non-buttered microwave popcorn
  • No salt butter
  • Food coloring of choice. Note: If you like to avoid dyes, you have spices and sauces available at home that will give you the same effect but be mindful that they will add flavor as well, ie: chili powder, Worcestershire, etc.
What you’ll do:
  • Pop the popcorn in the microwave according to package directions.
  • Put the butter in a microwave-safe bowl and melt.
  • Mix the food coloring (or spice) with the melted butter.
  • Pour the colored butter in a bowl, pour in popcorn, cover bowl, and shake to cover the popcorn.
Then just sit back and enjoy. This movie was amazing and the whole family loved it.

“Ever since college-bound Mike Wazowski was a little monster, he has dreamed of becoming a Scarer – and he knows better than anyone that the best Scarers come from Monsters University. But during his first semester at MU, Mike’s plans are derailed when he crosses paths with hotshot James P. Sullivan, a natural-born Scarer. The pair’s out-of-control competitive spirit gets them both kicked out of the University’s elite Scare Program. To make matters worse, they realize they will have to work together, along with an odd bunch of misfit monsters, if they ever hope to make things right. Monsters University bravely explores themes of self-discovery and the revelations that come with growing up.”
I don’t want to tell you anymore because I don’t want to ruin this movie experience for you if you haven’t already seen it. If you saw it and loved it at the theater, or you missed it like we did, you’ll want to head out and buy your copy today. It’s available in Digital HD, Digital HD 3D, 4-Disk Blu-ray 3D Superset, 3-Disc Blu-ray 2D Superset, and 3-Disc Blu-ray 2D Combo Pack. This is one movie you won’t want to miss and it’s one of those movies that you, and the kids, will want to watch over and over and over again. Pick up your copy today and get ready to get your scare on!
