I’m a little obsessed with Halloween. Not quite as obsessed as I am with Christmas, but obsessed just the same. Other than the coming of fall and cooler weather, I look forward to it all year long. Although I always say that I’ll wait until October 1st to start decorating, I really never do. This year was no exception. I started on September 23rd this year and began the process of building my Spooktacular Budget Halloween Home!

What was a little different this year from the past years is that little budget word I had to toss in there. See, if you’ve been following along at all (especially on Facebook), you already know that our family grew recently and we have two extra mouths to feed for awhile. All good! It’s a happy chaos and I’ve done this budget thing before; I got this! If you’re looking to turn your home into a haunted house on a budget this year, here are some tips that may help you out!

Tip 1: Know where to shop! You don’t have to go to one of those big fancy-pants Halloween stores (although, they are super fun) to build your Halloween home decor arsenal. Each year, I set a budget and see what’s new on Oriental Trading’s Halloween Headquarters. Greta here was last year’s big ticket item and she’s pretty darned creepy standing on our front porch with her glowing red eyes and blood smeared everywhere. Isn’t she PERFECT?! This brings me to my next tip.

Tip 2: Build your arsenal up over time. Don’t think you have to go all out the first year or two. Buy a little each year (dollar stores are your friends here too), and within a few years, you’ll be amazed at how much stuff you’ve accumulated!

Tip 3: Do buy an assortment of noisy stuff! The more spooky noises coming from your walkway, yard, and house…the better. All of those spooky noises coming from everywhere actually up the fear factor quite a bit (don’t expect the toddlers to be overly thrilled though!). This year, I added this fantastically frightening Gargoyle Door Knocker to “welcome” our guests into our home. Doorbells are so overrated, dontchathink?

Tip 4: Always make your trick or treaters feel welcome! Come on in, my pretties, let’s take a look at the inside now, shall we?

Tip 5: You can never have too many gargoyles during the Halloween season.

Tip 6: Backdrops are your friends. They’re cheap, they’re easy to put up, they make for great decorations, and they’re prefect for pictures at all of your parties. Everyone loves standing in front of a great scene and taking a selfie. Provide the perfect corner for your party guests!

Tip 7: More is more. Look, I’m all about the less is more concept. I apply it with my makeup, my hairspray (except for in the 80s because…BIG HAIR), spices in my recipes…but that concept doesn’t apply here. Ever walked into a haunted house that just had a little stuff scattered here and there? No, you say? Of course not! Make sure to drape spooky cloth wherever you can. It adds to the ambiance and it’s SO cheap. It’s seriously your best friend!

Tip 8: Don’t feel the need to remove your normal decor from the equation. It’s YOUR house. Make it your own, but creepier. Leave the beachy touches as they were and dress them up for the occasion!

Tip 9: Little DIY projects from last year’s leftover party favors are your friends. I had some skeletons left over. I strung those boney guys up on some fishing line…insta garland for the tiki bar. FOR FREE.

Tip 10: Leave surprises throughout your home. See that guy up there? He’s kind of hidden out and it’s super funny in fact. Once you get past the yard, the entrance, the living room fright fest, you turn the corner, and he starts screaming away. It’s priceless to scare your guests over and over again. That’s what Halloween is all about, right?

This last one isn’t a tip, just a fact actually. You want to use all of the cool lighting that you possibly can…inside and out…but you need to know that said cool lighting (especially strobe lights) will not photograph well so be prepared for that. However you choose to decorate for Halloween this year, or any other holiday in fact (and you should totally decorate for ALL of them because…FUN), be sure to be kind to your wallet. Visit Oriental Trading® today, build up your spooky arsenal, and just have fun. The world is so full of stress these days. Kick back, relax, and make people scream (in a good way) for a change. There’s so much fun to be had. Who’s with me? Happy Halloween, y’all!

From Being Mom’s Favorite to a Mom Myself

From being an only child and mom’s favorite, to being a big sister, to being the oldest of six kids, somehow I got lost along the way. But now that I’m going to be a mom myself, I’m ready to share my journey.

Oh hi.. Bryana Gregory here. New to Galveston Island (Atlanta, GA to here…can you say culture shock?) with one on the way (I’M GONNA BE A MOMMY)!! 28 years old and the oldest of 6, definitely the rebel child of the group. I mean some of us just really never wanna grow up; can I get an amen?! I’m addicted to coffee, elephants, rain boots, Hot Cheetos, tanning, fishing, the color black, and my ever-growing baby bump. He’s already my greatest adventure and we still have one week until we actually meet face to face! Life as I know it is about to change ANDDD I truly couldn’t be more ecstatic!!

From Being Mom’s Favorite to a Mom Myself

From being an only child and mom's favorite, to being a big sister, to being the oldest of six kids, somehow I got lost along the way. But now that I'm going to be a mom myself, I'm ready to share my journey.

So let’s back up a little bit…growing up (refer to rebel child), I didn’t always exceed people’s expectations, especially when it came to school or really sticking with anything. Live for the day (carpe diem) and not for the future type of person! For instance, I made a 9 in my freshman Lit class (yes, you read that correctly, a 9). As in, out of 100%, I got 9% of those.

How is that possible, you ask? Well, you write your name on the paper, answer a few questions (more than likely wrong), turn it in, and BAM…a 9! So boom, there went cheerleading that I had loved so much, and a repeat of my freshman year. The next year I would do better, take 2! I decided to sharpen up a bit, but NOPE!

Dropped out my junior year (which should have been my senior year because…see above), took my GED (passed first time, I really wasn’t dumb at all, just didn’t care, dammit), and headed off to college for two years.

AGAIN…drop out. It was kind of a skill of mine. I had gotten really good at this…I’m all in…oh wait…I failed, kind of thing.

From big girl jobs to my most loyal career…bartending! Life has always been one day at a time! Now pregnant…very pregnant…I think back and wish I would have done things a little differently. But why? I really wouldn’t be the person that I am today…correct?!

So here we are DAY ONE…the first day of my journey of chronicling my new-found life as a mom, a millennial who thought the world was about ME – and then in an instant, I realized there was so much more. This chaotic rollercoaster of a life? Stay tuned. I’m gonna get my shit together. Watch me!

Patriotic Summer Beach House Decor

Holiday decorating is a family tradition that everyone can enjoy. Thanks to my partnership with Oriental Trading, I was able to transform my home into a special Patriotic Summer Beach House to celebrate the summer holidays!

If you follow along here, or on Facebook, you probably already know that I’m obsessed with decorating for the holidays. Inarguably, Christmas is my favorite (I am actually an elf in mommy clothing after all), but I don’t discriminate against the other holidays. Whether it be Halloween, Mardi Gras, Valentine’s Day, 4th of July, or really any other holiday, I’m always down for making the house fun for the kids, and for me if we’re being honest!

Although Christmas is my favorite, summertime decorating is a total win all around; a lazy busy mom’s decorating dream come true so to speak. Why, you ask? Because what’s better than THREE patriotic holidays in a row? That’s right, one set of decorations, a one-time set up, and BAM…you’re done decorating for Memorial Day, the 4th of July, and Labor Day…just like that!

Red, white, and blue everything…all summer long. From Patriotic Hanging Lanterns lined neatly (hello OCD) in your beach den with tiki bar, of course…

To Patriotic Windsock String Lights lighting the way on entryways throughout your home, you really can’t go wrong!

This year, I went with an American theme and I’m glad I did because this heavy-duty Cloth Americana Bunting and matching Cloth Vintage Pillar Buntings have really been standing up well to these crazy storms we’ve been having in Galveston so far this summer. Seriously….so much wind and rain, it’s insane!

Although I do primarily do all of my holiday decorating for my kids (and me), I really want anyone that stops by to feel welcome, so a patriotic welcome sign (or any other welcome sign) should always be on every home door…all the time. That’s my tip for the day; you’re welcome!

It’s not too late to decorate for your patriotic summer! The 4th of July is right around the corner and we still have Labor Day. Oriental Trading has everything you need at affordable prices with quick shipping. Your kids will thank you and you’ll enjoy knowing you don’t have to decorate again until Halloween.
