If you’ve been following along at all this month, you are highly aware that I am a) a last minute holiday shopper, b) a coffee addict, and c) a lover of all things from the movie Elf. That’s incredibly random, I know, but let me explain how I used all three of them as inspiration this week.
On Wednesday evening I was feeling incredibly accomplished. I thought I was finished with my Christmas shopping. Unfortunately, I was not as I had moronically forgotten to buy anything for Bug’s Kindergarten teacher. The worst mother of the year award was imminent.
Thursday morning, I knew I had to redeem myself so Bubby and I headed to Walmart to pick up a gift card. As soon as we walked in the door, I realized how lame that was. A gift card? I was trying to redeem myself in my daughter’s eyes for goodness sakes. I’d have to be more clever than that.
And that’s when I saw this which was the beginning of my inspiration for my last minute gifting idea. Right in the middle of the Bakery Department, Starbucks was calling my name and I answered the call.
Do you see that sign? It says that if I participate in this delicious pairings experience, I will achieve pure perfection (OK, it doesn’t say that exactly but that’s how I’m interpreting it for my own use here). Everyone loves Starbucks and who wouldn’t enjoy receiving a perfect pairing like this for Christmas? I’m particularly fond of Starbucks Holiday Blend with its sweet, spicy, herbal flavor and I know it pairs perfectly with ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg to name a few flavors. And just as luck would have it, right across from this display I was able to find some fresh Bakery at Walmart Gourmet Cinnamon Rolls with Cream Cheese Icing. I picked up 2 bags of coffee and 2 boxes of the cinnamon rolls, one for home and one for gifting. We scurried around the rest of the store for other supplies and headed for home to get Bug and to put our gift basket together.
My crafting inspiration came from two sources (and this is where the rest of that randomness comes in). The first source was this amazing holiday bow making tutorial I read earlier in the week that really made beautiful bow making look easy. And the second source was my love of Elf. Watch this 8 second video and you’ll see why, plus you’re welcome for the giggle.
With my 3 inspirational sources aligned, I began the task at hand. I loaded the reusable basket with Starbucks Holiday Blend Coffee and the Gourmet Cinnamon Rolls for a delicious pairing. I included a mug for hot coffee and a cup for cold coffee, along with a sweet little bangle bracelet. Then, to make it pretty, I made my sparkly homemade bow and quite a few 6 inch ribbon curls. Bug was impressed and that makes my heart happy. Redemption!
This morning Bubby and I dropped Bug and her gift basket for her teacher off at school and headed home for our own little party.
Bubby enjoyed his cinnamon roll and juice for breakfast and he felt like a rock star. “Cake for breakfast Mommy? This is the best day EVER!”.
And I indulged a little, which I don’t do often. I wanted to see for myself how well these two items actually paired together. I brewed my beloved Starbucks Holiday blend with its sweet and spicy goodness (for the record, this is one of the few coffees that I will drink black if I have no creamer) and then I tasted the cinnamon roll, then the coffee, then the cinnamon roll, and well you get where this is going. It actually is a delicious pairing and although I’m not a sweet eater, I enjoyed this rare treat. It truly was a good day!

Shocker Alert: I crafted this week. I used to craft all of the time but I kind of just quit. You see, crafting takes imagination and skill (I have that), but crafting is much more than that. You have to have time (this is not a luxury I have) and patience (I stepped out of the line when they were handing that out because it was just taking.too.long). But I’ve missed it because it’s relaxing and rewarding so I stepped back on the craft wagon for the holidays thanks to a bright idea I had while working on a giving mission. And the result was fabulous (in my head…OK I think this is really cute). Without further ado, my latest crafting project: Sparkly Christmas Tree Ornaments made from repurposed light bulbs.
Eco-friendly, easy (although a little time-consuming), and most importantly…sparkly! Want to make one or 12 of your own? I’m here to tell you how! You probably already have the supplies around your house so gather them and let’s get started. What you’ll need:
- A blown light bulb (hey…no need to throw anything away)
- Elmer’s School Glue Mixture: 2 parts glue, one part water
- Small Paint Brush
- Vise Grips (shush, we’re rednecks, you can use something else but this worked great)
- Craft Wire
- Ornament Hook
- Elmer’s Glue Spots
Step 1: Put thebase of the bulb in a vise grip for easeof handling and so you have aplace to let it dry through the process.
Step 2: Paint on the glue mixture.
Step 3: Get ready to get your glitter on. I did this over the sink so I could wash the overspill down. Note: I also think it’s important that the glitter you use matches your fingernails, but that’s probably just me.
Step 4: Sprinkle the glitter until the bulb is covered while the glue mixture is still wet.
Step 5: Let it dry then apply another layer of the glue mixture and another layer of glitter.
Step 6: Lather, rinse, repeat. Yes this is where that patience (that I don’t have) came in. I had to put one layer of glue mixture then glitter, then another layer of glue mixture and glitter, then top it off with one more layer of glue mixture to hold the glitter to the bulb and avoid all of that unwanted fall off in to the carpet. That’s a lot of dry time.
Step 7: I wrapped craft wire around the neck of the bulb, tied it off, and formed a loop at the top so I’d have some way to add the hook for hanging. And it was ready for ribbon.
Step 8: Apply the glue mixture to the neck of the bulb, over the wire, and wrap ribbon around 3 to 4 times. Glue down the end of the ribbon so it doesn’t fray.
Final Step: Get out your Elmer’s Glue Spots and your favorite embellishment. Apply the glue spot to the center of the ribbon, apply the flower, attach the hook to your wire loop, and you’re ready to decorate the tree.
It looks very vintage, it’s eco-friendly and inexpensive, and oh-so-very sparkly!
To say that the kids were stoked that we received 3 #CreativityForKids craft kits in the mail MIGHT be a bit of an understatement. Faber-Castell Creativity for Kids offers the coolest craft kits on the planet and they have a huge selection! My kids were lucky enough to try some of them out. OK, so I might have played along too.
We received the Mossy Meadow Gnome Garden, the Deluxe Glitter Art Kit (our favorite..you might notice it sparkles a bunch), and the Tile Art Necklace Kit. We were so fabulously excited to get started. As you might imagine, we started with the sparkles!
The Creativity for Kids Deluxe Glitter Art Kit brought so much enjoyment to my family. Seriously…we had a sparkling good time!
When I opened the kit, the kids went wild. I loved that they played together and the kit engaged all 3 of them. You can’t put an age on glitter! There were cards, and treasure boxes, and gift tags, and lots and lots of sparkles. It was a beautiful thing and the kids and I enjoyed every moment of this activity!
Bubby found the sparkles…and it was ON!
And by on, I mean, ON EVERYTHING! Thank goodness I laid out that blanket.
And Bug’s creation was beautiful but not as beautiful as the fun and bonding they experienced. Creativity for Kids helped us create beautiful keepsakes and memories.
Once we used the sparkle kit up, we moved on to the next, the Tile Necklace Art.
The girls were especially excited about this one because they are always making jewelry. We liked the outcome and the overall quality of this kit. It came with everything needed to make these necklaces, even scissors. The colors are vibrant and the patterns are wonderful. I do need to point out that we ended up using our own glue because the glue and 2-sided tape provided in the kit didn’t work very well for us. Once we figured that out, everything went beautifully and the girls enjoyed their crafting time together and are excited to make more. The kit comes with enough supplies to make 8 trendy necklaces.
Bug is a little young for this kit (ages 8 to 98) so her big sister did most of the work.
Bug had fun working the tile.
The one thing Bubby is looking most forward to, we haven’t even gotten to yet. You see, here in The Woods, it’s either been way too hot or stormy for us to play with our Mossy Meadows Gnome Garden kit.
We are so excited about this. In the coming weeks, we will be painting and planting! Soon, it will cool off a bit and hopefully it will stop raining. We could do this inside, but you saw how the sparkles went. Please understand, dirt and paint inside might not go over well on our light carpet! For us, this is an outdoor activity, and Bubby and I will more than likely partake in this activity when the girls are at school as a fun learning lesson for him.
This is Bubby’s favorite character and I have a feeling he will be front and center in our garden. Stay tuned for updates. We will be sure to share how our garden grows!
Overall, we loved these kits and I encourage you to check out Creativity for Kids. They provide hours of fun for your kids and you to enjoy. And guess what? I have an awesome surprise for YOU!
I’m offering you the chance to win 2 fabulous kits, right here, right now! You have the chance to win the Deluxe Glitter Art Kit that we loved so much PLUS the Beach Buddies Shell Crafts Kit *JEALOUS* that we didn’t have the chance to play with! Are you ready for your kits? You and your kids can thank me later. Good luck! The winner will be selected and notified on September 1st.
